Numerous Strategies to Maximize Your Website's Effectiveness and Traffic!

All websites experience a life of their own. What you need to have, in order to maximize your website's effectiveness, is a site that is dynamic and expands over time. Here are some strategies that have worked to leverage your website to the fullest. I hope you like them!

1. Making it Very Social - Making your site as social as possible is the way to go nowadays. There are a lot of things you can do to facilitate Social on your website, most have to do with Facebook, because the majority of the traffic is on Facebook. Facebook's Social Plugins are absolute must for your website. My favorites are the Like button, Send button, Facebook Connect, and Facebook Comment box. As many of them as possible should be integrated into your site so your visitors and customers can share your pages and content easily on Facebook, so their friends see it. The Facebook comment Box is relatively new, it replaces old blog commenting by adding a box that posts comments right people's Walls on Facebook and keeps it all visible on your site as well. Another good idea is having Sharing buttons to other sites like LinkedIn, Digg, Twitter, and the new Google +1 button. This will allow people to "bookmark" your pages which tends to help you get more traffic from the inbound links it creates and other people seeing those links on various sites the page is listed on. It also increases the number subscribers to your content over time which can increase your repeat visitors.

2. Running Promotions - This is usually for anyone with a site and a decent amount of traffic. Running a sweepstakes or contest on your site is an amazing way to capture visitor's information that don't end up purchasing or becoming a subscriber. Running a promo like "Win an iPad by entering our Summer Sweepstakes" or "Submit your Video into our contest to Win" and promoting it with a graphic on the site in the layout or header will absolutely allow you to capture more people's info than you normally would, then allowing you to remarket to them later to generate a conversion or sale. WildFire is the best technology for running these types of sweepstakes and contests. WildFire runs on Facebook as an app, is very inexpensive, and keeps track of the entire campaign. Not only do you get "leads" from the campaign in a file, you get people to Like your Fan Page which is never a bad thing. I have never seen anything rocket fans like this app. I encourage everyone to check it out and implement this type of thing into what you do online. Once the promotion is created you can send an email blast about it to your customer file or database and let them know to enter, which builds your Facebook Fans. Simply a must!

3. Building your site out with Content - It's all about frequent, original content posting to your content management system (CMS) in order to expand your site over time with more pages of content. This can only bring you more free traffic from Google, Yahoo, and Bing. People ask all the time,"how can I get more traffic to my site?" The answer simply is: Post like crazy or pay someone else to do it, i.e. outsourcing your content production. It's important You have quality control in place if you outsource, but it can be a cost-effective way to load up with new content for the search engines to devour and rank. There isn't a right way to post content or articles, just post about what you think people are searching for primarily and mix in more obscure topics which will tend to rank higher in the organic search results. Frequent posting is definitely the way to go, I usually recommend 5-10 post a day to really maximize things, but the more the better which this type of thing. Then make sure to share and bookmark your articles through a process called content syndication, to get the most out of each post or page.

4. Marketing to your Subscribers / Customers - Websites that get a decent amount of traffic and are signing up subscribers or customers, should be periodically sending out nicely designed newsletters and promotions to their inboxes on a relatively frequent basis. A lot of companies just hammer their database with promotions, but you really have to nurture your database but sending quality, informative newsletters in order to build a loyal following and get them to respond in the future. Remarketing is an art and doesn't come without a lot of trial and error. Obviously subject line is huge to getting it opened in the first place. Make sure you deliver valuable content to your subscribers and you will build an amazing following of loyal customers!

5. Competitive Intelligence - Look at what your competitors are doing on their websites and on their Fan Pages. You can usually pick up some great ideas from other sites in your space that are trying whatever they can to capitalize on their website traffic. Emulate the good aspects of their sites into yours and improve them! This is  recommended to do on a monthly basis. As well as to subscribe to your competitors newsletters and join their Facebook Fan Page. Then you can see everything they are posting and sending out so you can get ideas for your own site and make sure you are one step ahead of them. There are tools that will actually tell you what keywords your competitors are using in paid search, one being Spyfu. Also Compete.com can give you a good amount of analytical data on you competitors site and your own site as well. 

6. Taking Advantage of Organic Platforms - Organic traffic, better know as free traffic. Which is simply where the search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN choose to rank your site when people search for various phrases. Many people think that their homepage is all that matters and gets the bulk of the traffic, but it's your inner pages of the site, i.e blog posts, product pages, additional site pages, that can get the 
majority of the traffic. Even if you don't have great organic rankings for your "core" or most popular keyword phrase, you can still get a lot of traffic to your inner pages, which is why the amount of inner pages has to be maximized and grown over time to take advantage of everything the search engines have to offer you. There are many website out there that have great organic rankings that you can post content on or list your company to take advantage of their good rankings and generate more traffic to your site. Some of these include: Ebay, EzineArticles.com, Merchant Circle, Craigslist, BackPage, and other sites that allow you to list your products or content on their sites. You have to dig around to find them under your core keywords and see who is ranking for this and that search phrase, then go see if you can post to that site in some way. Online press releases are another great way to expand, because they get republished on well-ranking news sites. 

7. Leveraging Videos - video is half the web traffic so you shold absolutely be creating videos and posting them to Youtube.com and other video sites. Videos tend to rank well in the search results so its another way to get additional organic search listings under competitive and not so competitive keywords. Creating videos has bocme easier and easier and there are service like Fiverr.com that have people who will create videos for cheap so you can get a bunch made and submitted cost-effectively. Video should definitely be part of Online Marketing strategy and you should decide what types of videis can be made and then make them and submit them. You can also add them as posts or pages to your site to increase content and pages. 

8. Maximize Paid Search - Wow, paid search. VERY FEW companies in general are maximizing paid search for all its worth. The vast majority of targeted web traffic for you product or website is going to come from paid search, so you darn well better have a really good strategy in place for leveraging it. Most companies can't even spend enough to get all their possible paid search traffic because their website doesn't convert the traffic into sales well enough. Over time, as you increase the effectiveness of your website to convert people you can open up the paid search budget and really get all the traffic thats out there for you. You basically have to "out-convert" your competitors in order to dominate as #1 in paid search to gain the highest click-through rate. This is still the #1 problem facing companies in this day and age in my opinion. 

9. Having a Nice Design - website design is extremely important to capitalizing on your traffic and visitors. The better you site looks the more effective it will tend to perform. Design quality is a relative thing and largerly subjective but you should look to redesign your site a few times, over time, to get a better looking site that will work better. Once you re-design your site you should look to plug in an optimization software to A/B test various page elements to see which work best.

10. Branding Yourself - This more applies to smaller sites, but larger sites too need to work on their branding and image their are portraying to their visitors and customers. "Personal Branding" has gained a lot of momentum in the last couple of years, which refers to branding yourself as an individual, i.e. CouponMom.com. You should work on your branding over time and try to make it better and more effective. Quality is the key here, you want to look really professional and polished, that conveys that you have your act together and are trust-worthy. Marketing content and messaging is also really important to impressing people when they viditor your site.

11. Retargeting Technologies - If you get a decent amount of traffic, then you should definitely look into what are called "behavioral retargeting" companies, which can essentially serve up your banner ads to site visitors when they leave your site without taking an action like buying. When these visitors leave your site and go surfing aruond the internet they see your banner ads, sometimes featuring the products they checked out on your site. This can be a very effective way to bring your visitors back to buy, especially if a promotion is offered in the banners ads. Some of the companies that offer this are: Retargeter, Fetchback, and Adroll. Google also has this technology in their Adwords campaigns. This is an absolute must for companies looking to convert their traffic better.

12. Referral Programs - Referral programs basically turn your customers into marketers for you. This is primarily for companies but can be done on a smaller scale as well. A company called Push44  have an amazing platform for running referral programs that's cost-effective also. Running referral programs on your site is a great way to maximize what you are doing and turn your customers or subscribers into proactive advocates for your company. With the advent of social media, it's easier than ever for people to share about your 
company and earn their referral credits. Gift cards and cash are great motivators for referral programs.

How to Effectively Grow Your Facebook Fan Page

Facebook represents a tremendous opportunity for any business or website to interact with people, customers, prospective customers, and others with whom you would like to start an interactive relationship. Building your Facebook Fan Page and growing your fans are absolute musts in this day and age for any company, website owner, business owner, or blogger. You can never have too many fans because they always can be re-marketed to later with specials, updates, promotions, and interesting news. Not to mention share your content and promotions with their friends to grow your exposure and traffic. Here are some great ways to build out your Facebook Fan Page and really start to grow it and leverage it. 

1. Advertising on Facebook one of the best ways to build your Facebook Fan count is to actually advertise on Facebook for fans. This is particularly effective because you can target your ads based on people’s Like and Interests, as well as their demographics, which makes your ads really targeted and relevant. For instance, if you run a Jazz music organization, you can target your ads to people that like Jazz on Facebook. Advertising for fans costs money per click or per thousand ad impressions, so you have to make sure you control your budget and plan your strategy wisely. I highly recommend to my clients and companies I know to keep an ad campaign for fans running at all times to keep up the branding and fan acquisition. You have to try various likes and interests to see which pulls fans best at the lowest cost, and you should change up your targeting periodically because your ads can get burned out. So keep it fresh and it will pull in targeted Fans really well for you all year long. Not to mention all of these new fans are likely new eyeballs that you can turn into a customer or loyal advocate by interacting well with them going forward.

2. On Your Site Promoting the Facebook Fan widget on your site is a great way to expose your fan page content, with a Like button, right in the layout of your site. This works really well for blogs because most have a side bar that the widget can be dropped into relatively easily. Regular sites can drop the fan widget into their articles section sidebar or put the Like button somewhere prominent on their Homepage. This allows you to capitalize more so on your web traffic by turning visitors into fans and grow your fan base. You can also drop the Facebook “Follow Us on Facebook” button on your site either in the header or footer and that will attract some fans for you as well. Also, the Facebook Like button, Recommend button, Send button, Facebook Connect, and Facebook Comment box, are other great Facebook social plug-ins you should be incorporating into your website. Tying Facebook into every aspect of your website and customer promotions should be the goal to really leverage the sharing and traffic you can gain from it. 

3. Your Customers/Members/Subscribers marketing your Facebook Fan Page to your actual customers or members is a must. You can send a dedicated email blast to all your current or previous customers/members and let them know to “Like” your Fan Page. You can run a Fan Page promotion or contest to your customers, subscribers, or members. Companies give away prizes and free merchandise to the winners of their contests and promotions, which will increase the number of Fans that enter to try to win. It’s usually effective because people are always trying to win something and it takes little effort usually to participate in the promotion. I recommend WildFireApp to run sweepstakes and promotions on your site and to your email lists to convert them into fans. It tracks everything and is really inexpensive. You have to use some kind of strategy like this otherwise your fans just won't grow at a fast enough rate to keep you happy. 

4. Auto-responders  including a link to join your Fan Page, or enter your sweepstakes/contest, in your website’s email auto-responders is a great idea because these emails are usually pretty basic without must substance other than thanking the customer for their purchase or thanking them for subscribing to the newsletters, so dropping a text link into these type of emails can take advantage of this opportunity to build your fan base. Make sure to periodically review your auto-responder emails to make sure they reflect your current promotions and other info you want to express to your customers. Many companies don't review their auto-responder emails frequently enough or at all, so make sure to keep them fresh!

5. Messaging Your Facebook Friends one of the of the easiest way to build your fans is to ask your Facebook Friends to come and join your fan page through a mass friend invite. This can be done in the left column of your Fan Page by clicking “Suggest to Friends.” Doing this is a great way to really boost your fan page numbers. Also, you can suggest to your fans and friends that they do the same thing, which can really help it go viral. There are tools that allow you to select all your friends at once, so you don't have to select them all by hand, so make sure to use that to your advantage.

6. Growing On Its Own when you start employing all these methods for growing your fans and they start clicking the Like button, their friends will see this and could click Like as well. So the more you market your Fan Page, the more it can go viral by all the friends of your new fans seeing this. Also, when you post status updates on you Wall and they Like, Comment, or Share your status update, their Friends will see that and could Like your fan page as well. Once you start promoting your Fan Page like crazy, this spill over effect will really increase and your Fan base and traffic will grow big time.

Most ROI-focused online marketing is tracked electronically to determine how many clicks it takes to result in a sale, which leads to a determination of whether the campaign is working out or not. Every company has their own average "acquisition cost" that they are willing to pay to acquire a new costumer, which determines how much they can pay to drive traffic to their website. Determining how many clicks it takes to make a sale or lead will give you your overall conversion rate, ex. 3 sales for every 100 clicks would be a 3% conversion rate. Every different type of online campaign will have a unique conversion rate based on how targeted it is. Targeted search on Google, Yahoo, and MSN should be the most targeted online advertising you can run. The nice thing about Internet Advertising is that most of it is able to be tested and measured on a small basis to see if it converts for you. If the profit out-weighs the spend you have a successful campaign! Some companies even run it to losing money in order to build their customer database, but most companies strive to get a return, or at least break-even, on their online advertising campaigns. Here are some ways any website can improve their overall website conversion rate:

1. A/B Testing - running split testing "experiments" on your website or landing page used to be cumbersome and only for large companies that could afford a good software to handle it. Or they had to build something themselves to handle it. Recently, a software was launched called Optimizely that provides an easy way to run A/B test on your site. All you have to do is drop a piece of javascript code into the page you want to optimize (or your persistent header/footer) and you can run conversion improving experiments by rotating in different versions of the page elements such as: the header, main graphic, Go button, special offer, and any other part of the page's layout. You can even move things around the page to try different placements. Once you have set-up your experiments, it runs the variations to your live traffic and tells you which converts to sales most frequently, thereby giving you the intelligence as to what is working best with your customers. How cool is that?! In my opinion, Optimizely is a must for any ecommerce or lead generation company looking to increase their conversion rates and maximize their online advertising dollars. It's my #1 recommendation to clients and prospective clients.


2. Professional Look Feel - all the A/B testing in the world isn't going to make your site more beautiful, so make sure you have a really good web designer working on your site and doing your graphics. Study your competition and emulate their good design ideas, trying to improve upon them. Go for clean and professional looking and guess what: You don't know what looks good! Have some people outside your company give their opinions on your website's design and usability.

3. Capturing Information - one of the most frequent frustrations of companies I speak to is: why are 90 +/- percent of people leaving my website without taking an action? How do I capture more of their information so they can be followed-up with? The old school answers are to add a newsletter sign-up box or a pop-under box so the visitor can get more information. The new school answer is encouraging them to join your Fan Page or Follow on Twitter. Another amazing newer methods is by using a 3rd party program like Wild Fire App, which allows you to run various contests and sweepstakes through Facebook, which can be promoted on in your site's layout to capture their information. I am running an iPad 2 giveaway using it right now and it's working amazingly at gather information and generating Likes to my Fan Page. This has become one of my top recommendations to clients.

4. Short Check Out - There is nothing worse than a multi-step check-out process to hamper your conversion rate. Make sure your check-out process or lead form is as short and painless as possible. There are also technologies that can capture information keyed into your check-out or lead form, so that if people abandon the check-out you can still shoot them an email with a promotion as a follow-up. Studying your abandonment rate and trying to counter it should be a focus of your internal efforts.

5. Security - In these days of cyber-crime, people want to feel secure that giving you their personal information and credit card info is going to be safe. As a merchant or lead generator, it's imperative to make sure your site is properly encrypted and safe from hacking. Using companies like Thawte, Verisign, and other secured certificate companies is a must. Displaying trust logos on your site is a must. I like the BBB Online logo as well to emphasize trust with your visitors. The HackerSafe logo is also good to display. A couple important industry logos might be a good idea as well. Make sure all your security logos are up to date and take it seriously.

6. Behavioral Re-Targeting - showing people banner ads when they leave your website is known as behavioral re-targeting and has become quite the fad in online advertising. You may have noticed that when you are shopping online and leave the site, you start seeing that companies banners following you around the Internet. Personally, I think this is great for merchants, but a little annoying for consumers. But it does serve the purpose of encouraging more of the people not buying on your site to possibly come back and buy. Some of the companies that offer this service are: AdRoll, FetchBack, and Retargeter.

7. Special Offers/Promotions - running special offers on your website is a must, because people like to get a deal, especially in this day and age. You should try different deals and run them through split testing to see which ones resonate most with your consumers. Don't assume you know what special deal will work best, because you don't know what will resonate best with consumers. Be creative with it...don't be lame with it!

8. Email re-marketing - having really good HTML emails with a good strategy behind your follow-ups is essential to re-marketing effectively to your customer base and the people that have given you their information to be followed-up with. Make sure to review your website's auto-responder emails and customized follow-ups quarterly to make sure they are well done and reflect your companies current promotions. Test out your subject lines and email copy. Include a special offer in your email follow-up. Encourage people to join your Fan Page in all your site's emails. Make sure to personalize your emails as much as possible. Always be really friendly and attempt to build rapport with your clients at every turn.

9. Customer Referral Program - one of the best ways to maximize your conversion rate is by launching an awesome customer referral program. It can be as simple as giving away a $25 gift card when someone refers a new customer to your company. Recently, companies like CureBit have come out that add social sharing to your check-out process that encourages people to share it on Facebook for a special incentive, this is brilliant in my opinion. Integrating Facebook into your website as much as possible should be the goal so your site can go viral more easily. Use the Facebook social plugins on your site where ever you can.

These are some ideas that you can implement to increase your website's conversion rate. The higher you can make your conversion rate, the more money you can spend on the front-end to drive traffic to your website. If you want to spend in Google, Yahoo, MSN, and on Facebook with the big boys, you need to focus on increasing your conversion rate. If you want to grow a large, productive affiliate program you will focus on increasing your conversion rate. For most companies there is a ton of traffic out there, especially in Search, you just have to be able to convert on it to maximize your overall spend to get more of the traffic, otherwise all those searchers will be going to your competitors and you will be losing the sales.
